Always Reading, Inc.
Our mission is to empower children with an abundance of knowledge through books.
Why We Do - What We Do
According to the US. Department of Education, 67% of fourth grade students are below proficiency in reading. In other words, nearly 2.4 million students struggle with reading at grade level.
At Always Reading, we are concerned with these reading statistics and we have great concern with what our children are learning when it comes to American History. In particular, how Black History is and is not incorporated into the American story. Black History is American History. Therefore, a significant number of the books we provide for free are focused on exposing our children to the many stories untold or never talked about.
“One is astonished in the study of history at the recurrence of the idea that evil must be forgotten, distorted, skimmed over. We must not remember that Daniel Webster got drunk but only remember that he was a splendid constitutional lawyer. We must forget that George Washington was a slave owner…and simply remember the things we regard as creditable and inspiring. The difficulty, of course, with the philosophy is that history loses its value as an incentive and example; it paints perfect men and noble nations, but it does not tell the truth.” W.E.B. Dubois
